On knowing what you want

Most of us were never taught how to ask. We were taught how to comply, how to perform, how to second-guess — but rarely how to listen to ourselves long enough to know what we want. Learning to want is a quiet, slow practice. It does not have to be a destination. It can simply be a habit of paying attention.

Start small. Notice when something feels good, and notice when it does not. Notice without judgment. The point is not to arrive somewhere. The point is to come home to yourself.
